Musicians love to make music in a beautiful place. Kerry is just that, and means even more to me because I’ve been spending my summers there since a baby. As my career caught up with my dream of becoming a chamber musician, I was looking for more ways of working with some of the wonderful and inspiring musicians I was meeting. Inviting them to Kerry for an intense week of music-making seemed to be the answer.
With many thanks to a few very encouraging people the first week of Chamber Music in Retreat Lodges (as Kerry’s International Chamber Music Festival was originally called) happened in May 1998. Our goal then as now was to perform classical chamber music in all corners of Kerry, speaking to our audience both literally and through the music. We opened Retreat Lodges’ doors to the public and offered masterclasses to the students of Kerry.
